It has been quite some time since i blogged. Most of the time I just log on and check my mail. Then read a few blogs. At the side are a few blogs that I recommend highly:


Now just recovered from tooth extraction. Quite a painful week for me. Pain for almost two weeks today. Now really grateful cos I can eat solid food again. But it was already too late cos I can enjoy the food during Raya. Went to 5 houses the first day, 4 houses the second and 3 houses the next. Can't really eat much but just want to visit some old friends. Didn't manage to go to Zool's house. Sorry Zool, maybe next year.

Doggy Life

Finally my dog just recovered from Canine Distemper Virus. Apparently the mortality rate for those infected is around 80%. Made me very worried when I discovered that just before Easter.

At first I just thought that he is just tired when he didn't jump over me when I came back home. Usually he would just jump over me and my parents whenever we reached home, slobering over me.

We then took him to the vet when he was still like that for a few days. It was then the vet told us that he got the virus. He said it would be better if he was put to sleep so that he would not be able to infect other dogs. When we told him that Timmy is our only dog, the vet gave us some medicine and ask us to give Timmy whatever food that he will eat. No!! It cant be! He is going to be fine!!
He told us that as long as Timmy is willing to eat, he had a high chance of recovering.

But deep inside I was afraid that the vet might be right. As soon as we gave him friend chicken wings, which he loved most. He just took a sniff and walked away. I hope that it was just his usual choosy self.

The next day he wouldn't eat anything. My father and I then forced him to eat or rather drink milk mixed with the medicine.

Sarawak 27 Ethnics

I always heard that Sarawak have 27 ethnic groups. I can only list 24 here. Anyone knows any extra can you please kindly tell me.

My Favourite Local Food

Chinese
=======
KongPia - I call it the Chinese burger. It is a small piece of bun with some sesame seeds and with some pork stuffings. Very nice although quite small. Roughly 50 cents a piece.

Kampua - Foochow noodle. Famous throughout Malaysia and can be found in Sibu. The Hokkien version is the kolo mee. Can be found in Kuching. Another version is called the Tamee, by the Teochew. Each is almost similiar but have their own distinct flavour. In the west Malaysia, it is called Wantan mee.

Bakuteh - The Kelang bakuteh is known throughout Malaysia.

Kelupis - Something like pulut panggang but nicer because of the fragant leaves that wrapped the glutinous rice.

Umai - The Malaysian version for sushi. It is raw fish or ray fish mixed with local herbs and spices.

Mulong - A sago worm that is a big as a human thumb. Can be eaten raw or fried.

Iban

Pansoh - Chicken cooked in bamboo. Very nice.

Tuak - Local liquor. Made from rice. Can be found in abundance in longhouses during the Gawai Celebration.

Tapai - Made from fermented rice.

Kasam - Fish or pork that have been preseverd.


Others

Ambal - A type of clam/mussel? Not really sure. But very nice.

Buntal - Salted dried pufferfish. Non poisonous. Can be found in the Sri Aman division. especially Kabong. Very nice if eaten with porridge. But you need to have skills in looking for the flesh.

New Year Thots

My third week here for the year 2005. The first week on Friday I saw another Hornbill on my way back. Two of my collegues also saw it although they were not sure it was a hornbill. Its beak was quite white and paler compared with the hornbill we usually see in the advertisments and pamplets.

During the registration for the first week, I was saddend/pitied by the condition of the students. I was asked to collect their yearly fees for primary 6. A few of them had not much money and when i asked for the money some asked to pay in installement. The parents wore no shoes to school. The pupils are at least luckier, they are provided with a full set of uniform by the government.

Week 3

Started to car pool with some teachers. Tuesday morning was very dark. Very thick mist, enjoy watching it which is different frem the usual haze from the open burning.

Wednesday morning my windshield got knocked by a stone from the road.

Week 2

Nothing much happening except for in house training. Difficult to find place to eat here. So we just eat tapioca's shoots.

One comment from our ass minister which I disagree, non-bumi students are not allowed to go into Uitm which is absurd when foreign students are welcomed.
